The Importance of Child-Proof Packaging

While veteran cannabis consumers have been buying their product in bags for many decades, legalization is demanding a safer method of delivery. Much like the pharmaceutical industry, regulations require cannabis producers to use child-proof packaging. Although cannabis products are typically safer than pharmaceutical drugs of a similar nature, no one wants to see these products find their way into the hands of a child.

With the growing legalized cannabis market, cannabis products are now available in a wide variety of consumable products including capsules, decadent edible chocolates and candies, sodas and fruity beverages. Many times, these delicious treats are irresistible to adults, let alone children. In fact, recent law changes in Colorado forced cannabis candy manufacturers to stop producing edibles in shapes which would be appealing to children.

Although all edibles are marked with a THC warning emblem, children who find the candies may be too young to understand what it means. Therefore, cannabis providers and consumers alike must commit to keeping youngsters safe by whatever means necessary.

Although there is no record of a death occurring from a cannabis overdose, the smaller body and faster metabolism of a child could be detrimental. Additionally, studies have shown the brain continues to develop throughout our early twenties, so it may be unwise to introduce foreign substances of any kind, as it could alter the developmental progress of the brain.

Child-Proofing Slows Down Fur-Babies, Too!

While some people will complain about child-proofing initiatives, there is another safety aspect that child-proof packaging addresses: preventing harm to our pets. Increased safety precautions with packaging can prevent smells from escaping, or even slow down Fido from devouring your medicine as he tries to chew through the container. Dogs and cats also have endocannabinoid systems. However, due to their small size, they can overdose easily, causing temporary neurological issues, seizures, and even death.

Regardless if you’re using cannabis medically or recreationally, keeping cannabis out of the hands of children and pets should be your number one priority. With precautionary measures like child-proof packaging, cannabis can be used responsibly.
